How To Celebrate Every Day Like Its Your Birthday.

It always makes me sad to hear people dread their birthdays or lament the fact that they are another year older. I believe that birthdays are a chance to take a step back, reflect, and fully appreciate the miracle of being alive. At its very core, the birthday is a celebration of life itself. I recently had the pleasure of celebrating a birthday and it was one of the best ones I’ve had so far. I was overwhelmed by the expressions of love and the warm wishes from people in my life. I spent the day teaching fitness in my community, sharing wellness with coaching clients, throwing a big birthday ball for charity at the Westin Saint Francis hotel in SF, and hanging out with my loving birthday present: a kitten named Tux.  All throughout I was present to a very intense feeling of gratitude for the gift of life and for the blessings in my life.

My party with the best people in SF!! Happy birthday to Tim Chang, Caroline Jordan, Jonathan Teo, Raj Kapoor, Pangfua Her & Steve Chen!!!!

My twenty-eighth birthday party “palazzo” at the Westin St Francis Union Square San Francisco. Thank you ALL so much for coming out to celebrate and support, we had over 800 in attendance and 100% net proceeds benefiting Family House SanFrancisco and Hackcancer !!!!

At the end of the birthday weekend I came to the realization that a year is much too long to wait to take part in the joys that make your special day so special. Some might argue that treating every day like it’s your birthday might dampen the celebratory nature of your actual birthday, but I believe if we celebrate all of our days as if they are special, we’ll always be looking for the good, hoping for the best, and seeking out the ways to make the most out of every day. So that is my resolution for this New Year: live every day like it’s my birthday! For me this means to become present to the gift of being alive EVERY day. It also means being open to and aware of all the love in our lives EVERY day. You see, I believe our birthdays are just an opportunity to experience an outpouring of the love that is there all the time. The only thing stopping us from experiencing that love on an ongoing basis is our inability to realize it, but it’s always there. Want to join me in this resolution to make every day feel special? Here are a few ways to celebrate each day like its your birthday:

  • Show Yourself Love. Why wait until your birthday to treat yourself special? Self love, self respect, and self care starts with YOU and is the most important part of living a happy, healthy life. Show yourself love every day by taking excellent care of yourself – mind, body, and spirit. It seems simple but this concept is hard to master (Im working on it daily and getting better, but trust me I need a constant reminder!) Here is my list of 100 ways to show yourself self-love to get you started.  This is not a checklist – only a list of suggestions. Feel free to take the ones that speak to you and ignore the rest. One thing I know for sure is that if you learn how to love yourself on a daily basis you will have the  keys to success. Start treating yourself like you would treat yourself on your BIRTHDAY, with the special kind of care that you deserve.
  • Dont save it for a special occasion. Every day of your life is a special occasion. We forget what a gift it is to be alive. LIVE YOUR LIFE NOW, this is not a dress rehearsal. Use your fancy dinnerware. Travel somewhere new. Tell the people in your life you love them now. Dont wait till your birthday to celebrate the miracle that is your life. Do it now.
  • Remind yourself of how far you’ve come. Each year I usually use my birthday as day to reflect on the year. I look back at what I’ve accomplished and try to focus on the good things I’ve done throughout the year. I’ve found it to be a worthwhile exercise and something I’ve always thought I should more often. You don’t need to pat yourself on the back every minute, but it wouldn’t hurt to take a moment every once and awhile to think about all of the things you’ve done and be proud of the person you are.
  • Leave enough time for fun. Sometimes you need to take a few steps back to see things clearly.  Birthdays tend to be moments in our lives where we reflect, relax, and enjoy life. Why not make this a regular practice?? Never let your life become so filled with work, your mind become so crammed with worry, or your heart become so jammed with old hurts or anger, that there’s no room left in them for fun, for awe, or for joy.
  • Express gratitude. Birthdays tend to remind us of all the wonderful people and blessings in our lives. But why wait to recognize how fortunate we are? Gratitude is a way of living not an action only reserved for birthdays and holidays. Live your life every day with a grateful heart and you will find more to be grateful for!

Imagine taking this approach to life every day. Celebrate being alive, remind yourself of everything you have to be thankful for, love yourself to the utmost and tune into to all the love around you. If you really want to get into the spirit, you can even give yourself a gift every day to rejoice in the treasure of another beautiful day of living. And remember, every day that passes, every year that goes by, although we may be getting older, what’s really happening is that we’re getting to live longer, one more day, one more year and that is the greatest gift of all.

Happy Birthday! With Love,

Secrets to Lasting Lifestyle Change. Rome wasn’t built in a Day.

Throughout my fitness career I have seen people get into healthy habits and quickly make the jump into eating well and exercise. Then they pile on the miles and hours on the ellipticals, only to wind up back on the couch, never to be seen again within a few short years. It’s true! The biggest challenge in maintaining a lifetime of healthy habits is doing too much, too fast, too soon. We expect a quick fix or immediate results and then when that doesn’t provide the desired outcome (or is too much to handle all at once) we get discouraged, burnt out, and throw in the towel.  But it doesn’t have to be that way. You CAN maintain a healthy lifestyle without resorting to extremes or only eating broccoli. You just have to go about it the right way. Whether you are starting your wellness journey or looking to set a new goal, here are my secrets for making habits that stick, for the rest of your life!

Secrets to Lasting Lifestyle Change. Rome wasn’t built in a Day.

  • Get Support. No person is an island, it’s truly challenging to accomplish your goals without a team supporting your success. Often times its not about getting tons of support, but about finding the RIGHT people to help you. Communicate your goals to people in your life who will hold you accountable, help you overcome obstacles, and keep you positive when it gets hard.  Im a big believer in coaching, as I have seen the rewards that investing in yourself can bring. A coach can help you overcome roadblocks, keep you moving forward towards the life you want, and give you constant encouragement and support. The secret to a life of lasting healthy habits is surrounding yourself with others who lift you up.
  • Ease Your Way Into It and follow a moderate rate of progression. There’s no better way to get sick of something than to do it too much, too hard, and too often, to the exclusion of other pursuits and activities. Yes, healthy habits require time and commitment, but they do NOT require that you take on the monastic or ascetic life. Regardless of the age at which you start making positive lifestyle changes, take your time and don’t hurry things. There’s no need to do several marathons in your first year of running or become a yoga master in 30 days.  Building layer upon layer of quality training, quality rest, quality information-seeking, and quality experience is an integral part of a healthy, fulfilling, balanced lifestyle. With that approach, you’ll be rolling across finish lines and mastering yoga poses for many decades to come.
  • Set SMART goals. I fully support making goals that challenge you to grow. But if your goals are unrealistic or unfocused you are setting yourself up for failure. Create goals that challenge you but are detailed by following a S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timed) goal setting plan. Stretch yourself but set yourself up for success with goals designed to help you make baby steps forward towards progress.
  • ACTION Plan ahead of time. Make your SMART goals work for you by creating an action plan to accomplish them. Having a plan for the week (or month) removes the pressure of feeling clueless and it gives you a solid strategy for success when it comes to your health. Prepare a realistic workout program and map out a schedule for yourself. Line up a meal plan for the week and plan healthy nutritious options ahead of time. Think ahead and make time for breaks to decompress and recharge your batteries. It pays off to think forward and have a schedule to keep you on track for success with your wellness goals. Be flexible when needed, the important part is that you just keep moving on.
  • Have FUN with it!! If eating well and exercise is stressing you out, you are doing it wrong. Choose activities you love and explore recipes that entice you. Make health something that brings more energy, vitality, and JOY to your life. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing – figure out what YOU need to feel healthy, happy, and strong.
  • Think and Live Seasonally. It’s impossible to maintain maximum fitness year-round, year after year. That’s why top endurance athletes build their seasons around one or a few key events and vary their training in cycles of weeks or months at a time to reach their peak fitness when those events happen, a system called periodization. You can adapt this principal to your healthy lifestyle goals. Enjoy seasonal foods and get creative with nutritious meals based off the season’s bounty. Take up seasonal activities like skiing in the winter, hiking in the spring, and swimming in the summer to bring variety to your exercise routine. There are many reasons such an approach is beneficial and productive. Each cycle brings new challenges, and rewards, to you. You’ll be healthier, fitter, and enjoy maintaining a life full of variety and color!
  • Don’t diet. Just eat HEALTHY. When you go on a diet, you will eventually have to go off a diet. This creates a yo-yo effect that will NOT help in maintaining your wellness goals long term. Avoid quick fixes and extremes (only meat and cheese? REALLY?) and just do the work to learn how to eat HEALTHY. Focus on clean, nutritious foods that make you feel good and fuel your body with energy. Learn about portion sizes, nutrients, and how to eat well throughout the day. Everybody’s body and needs are different. Learn about nutrition and how to eat to make YOU feel amazing – it’s worth investing time in and will help you eat healthy for the rest of your life.
  • Drop the “all or nothing” mindset. This mentality sets you up to feel guilty eventually and is why so many people struggle to succeed. Expecting to stick to a structured eating and exercise plan for an extended period of time without ever deviating is unrealistic. Things happen and life can get in the way – through illness, other obligations, exhaustion, different opportunities, etc – it is impossible for someone to NEVER miss a workout. Remember it doesn’t matter if you fall down, it is if you pick yourself up that counts. It’s not all or nothing, get back at it and don’t beat yourself up.
  • Practice the 80/20 Rule. While healthy habits important, there are times when we all want to indulge and need a little wiggle room to do so. Life is meant to be enjoyed, and if having a piece of cake at your friends birthday party is going to bring you pleasure, then by all means you should have a piece of cake. Thats why I subscribe to the 80/20 rule. This rule reminds you that if you want to maintain a healthy body and weight, you’ll need to make wise choices more often than not, but can make occasional allowances for certain foods or days off without falling off track. Depriving yourself to an extreme isn’t sustainable long term and neither is indulging 24-7. When you don’t let yourself enjoy the things you love, you end up craving them more. By indulging wisely and treating yourself once in a while, it makes it easier to stay on track and maintain a healthy life. Live by the 80/20 Rule and keep your healthy habits (and life satisfaction) in tact long term.
  • Be NICE to yourself! Think Positive and STOP beating yourself up. You are a work in progress; which means you get there a little at a time, not all at once. You can’t make positive change with a negative, self-depricating mind. Get rid of the trash talk and BELIEVE in yourself.  The way to overcome negative thoughts and destructive emotions is to develop opposing, positive emotions that are stronger and more powerful. Listen to your self-talk and replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Regardless of how a situation seems, focus on what you DO WANT to happen, and then take the next positive step forward. No, you can’t control everything that happens to you, but you can control how you react to things. Everyone’s life has positive and negative aspects – whether or not you’re happy and successful in the long run depends greatly on which aspects you focus on.

Remember “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” and  as Epictetus would say, “No great thing is created suddenly.” . You never need to carry more than you can hold, just take one small step at a time.  And while you’re out there making decisions instead of excuses, learning new things, and getting closer and closer to your goals, know that there are others out there, like me, who admire your efforts and are striving for greatness too.

Practice the skills above and teach yourself how to adopt healthy habits you want to stick with.  Listen to your body and support yourself towards your goals with a realistic action plan tailored to your needs. Be consistent, realistic, and make time for your health. Always stay positive and make your ultimate goal one of WELLNESS. Every day is different. The important part is showing up, doing your best, and committing to a healthy, happy life.

Love to you and your long life,

Is Kombucha Good For You? Health Benefits of Drinking Kombucha

Is Kombucha Good For You? Here are the health benefits of drinking kombucha and the reasons why you might want to pick up a bottle.

Many years ago, I was not a believer in kombucha. You want me to pay $4 dollars for floating boogers in a drink??? No thank you. As the drink trend grew I remained strong in my resolve to avoid the potent potion at all costs. And then something happened. I changed my mind.

Have you heard of social contagion theory which examines dynamic social networks and human behavior? Essentially this is the idea that if your close friends and networks exhibit healthy habits, you are more likely to adapt those same habits. Like this NY Times article “are your friends making you fat?” you are more likely to pick up habits of those you surround yourself with. Which means surround yourself with people who not only support your wellness goals, but can be a positive influence on your health as well. This leads me to how I finally gave kombucha a chance. With everyone in SF carrying a bottle, I caved and gave it a sample. Surprisingly the strand like substance wasnt a turn off and I found my first cup of kombucha oddly delicious. From that moment on it became a habit (and a rather expensive one at that). I wanted to believe in it’s magical medicinal powers, but I was always curious…. Is kombucha really a health drink wonder?? Or is it just really well marketed bubbles? I decided it was time to investigate and share the information with all of you. Here’s the inside scoop on this health drink, so you can decide for yourself if its worth the $4 bucks!

To Drink or not to Drink: Kombucha 101

What is Kombucha? Kombucha (pronounced com-boo-ka) is a fizzy fermented tea beverage that is a health-seeker’s delight. Kombucha is an “ancient fermented tea beverage” that has a natural effervescence (like bubbly carbonation) that is full of probiotics, antioxidants, B vitamins and so much more. Basically it’s fermented tea. It has roots date back to the Qin Dynasty in 220 BCE in China and it is well-known for thriving in the health-conscious hippy communities of the 1970’s.

What’s IN it?? The ingredients are simple. It’s tea + water + sugar + SCOBY (a fermenting culture that is made from previous batches that stands for symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast).

How is it made?? Kombucha tea is made by fermenting sweetened green or black tea with a culture of yeasts and bacteria called the “Kombucha mushroom,” according to It is not actually a mushroom; rather, it is called that because of the shape and color of the sac that forms at the top of the tea after fermenting.  [IBtimes] After you ferment the sweetened tea with the bacteria, you get a liquid containing vinegar (which explains the sour taste) plus B vitamins and other chemical compounds.

What does it taste like? Personally I think it tastes like apple cider soda. It depends on which flavor you choose to buy. It can taste sour and vinegar-like, to some. It’s tart, refreshing, with fuzzy bubbles that tingle in your stomach – it will definitely make you burp! 😉

I’ve heard it has alcohol or caffeine? The longer it ferments, the higher the alcohol percentage, however all store brands are regulated to be under the alcohol limit.  Some people report a slight relaxing buzz when drinking certain brands of kombucha, but I have to report I have never gotten “drunk” off of it. As for caffeine, the fermentation process also “alters the caffeine molecules” so it is not as potent as freshly brewed black tea.

Where can I buy it? Kombucha can be found in health food stores and grocery stores such as Whole Foods Market. I am in LOVE with all the flavors of Kevita drinks, it’s a good choice for new kombucha drinkers. I am also a fan of Synergy’s “Strawberry serenity” flavored kombucha.

Ok so I just want to know…. Is Kombucha Good For You? Many people believe that kombucha has a variety of health benefits, including improving immune system, cleansing toxins, improving digestion and liver, preventing arthritis, and even preventing cancer. Some also say that it gives them a calm energy, improves their sleep, or boosts their performance. Here are some of the supposed health claims of Kombucha according to IBtimes:

  • When the yeasts in Kombucha break down the sugar and combine with the tea, it forms antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals which can fight wrinkles diabetes and boost the immune system.
  • The high amount of Vitamin B in the elixir can help extract more energy and nutrients from the food you eat.
  • Drinking this can increase energy, ease muscle soreness, and help with recovery post workout – therefore improving athletic performance.
  • Because it is probiotic, consuming Kombucha may aid digestion and boost the immune system.
  • Some even say that it can cure anything from baldness to insomnia to AIDS and cancer!

Here are the hard facts according to WebMD “Benefits of kombucha tea are primarily based on personal reports and a few animal studies. There are no clinical trials or sound scientific evidence to substantiate the numerous claims. That is not to say there are not any benefits from drinking the tea; it simply means there is no evidence that proves the benefits it claims.”

Moral of the story? Kombucha is not a cure-all or magical elixir. While it does have a few beneficial qualities similar to yogurt, kefir, or other probiotic drinks, you can get equally healthy nutrition from a balanced (and budget friendly!) diet. Even though Kombucha isn’t a quick fix for anything,  if you enjoy the taste, you can still enjoy it in moderation….. just dont expect miracles to happen 🙂

Have you tried kombucha? Do you like it and are there some health benefits that you’ve seen work for you? Leave your top tip as comment below, Id love to hear from you! And as always, if you liked this post, please share it with your friends on Facebooktwitter, or email.

How To Be the Type Of Person You Want To Meet

Are you the type of person others want to be around? Here’s how to be the type of person you want to meet.

be the type of person you want to meet

be the type of person you want to meet

Source: 7×7

Are you the type of person others want to be around? Read this post on how to be the type of person you want to meet and start cultivating positive relationships in your life.

Surround yourself with people who lift you higher. This is a topic we talk a lot about on my facebook community. Get rid of toxic people in your life, cultivate relationships with others who LIFT YOU UP. Surround yourself with those who reflect the person you want to be.  Choose friends who you are proud to know, people you admire, who love and respect you – people who make your day a little brighter simply by being in it. Relationships should help you, not hurt you.  After all, life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you.  When you free yourself from negative people, you free yourself to be YOU – and being YOU is the only way to truly live.

While all of this facebook talk is good and great here’s a question we never ask, “What Am I doing to LIFT others higher?”  “Am I the type of person others want to be around??”

Negative thinking, settling for second best, and unhealthy habits are contagious. But guess what else is? Self improvement, positive living, healthy habits, and choosing happiness. Want to be an inspiration to others and LIFT them up? Start by improving yourself first. The way you live affects everyone around you, so lead by example and make the right choices. You can improve your community just by starting with yourself. Here are some great ways to be the type of person you want to meet:

Share the LOVE. People don’t remember what you say, they remember how you made them feel. Make them feel good.  Supporting, guiding, and making contributions to other people is one of life’s greatest rewards.  In order to get, you have to give.

Show everyone kindness and respect.  Treat everyone with kindness and respect, even those who are rude to you – not because they are nice, but because you are.  There are no boundaries or classes that define a group of people that deserve to be respected.  Treat everyone with the same level of respect you would give to your grandmother and the same level of patience you would have with a child.  People will notice your kindness and it will most likely produce positive results.

Accept people just the way they are. In most cases it’s impossible to change them anyway, and it’s rude to try.  Save yourself from needless stress.  Instead of trying to change others, give them your support, love and acceptance. Lead by example.

Encourage others and cheer for them. Having an appreciation for how amazing the people around you are leads to productive, fulfilling, and peaceful outcomes.  Be happy for those who are making progress and cheer for their victories.  Show gratitude and be thankful for others openly.  What goes around comes around, and sooner or later the people you’re cheering for will start cheering for you.

Forgive Others and LET GO. Holding on to resentment is like drinking poison, you end up hurting yourself more than the people you hate. Dont live with hate in your heart or let your days be clouded by anger. Learn to forgive and LET GO. Forgiveness is not saying, “What you did to me is okay.”  It is saying, “I’m not going to let what you did to me ruin my happiness forever.”  Forgiveness is the remedy.  It doesn’t mean you’re erasing the past, or forgetting what happened.  It means you’re letting go of the resentment and pain, and instead choosing to learn from the incident and move on with your life.  Remember, the less time you spend hating the people who hurt you, the more time you’ll have to love the people who love you.

Give what you want to receive. Don’t expect what you are not willing to give.  Start practicing the golden rule.  If you want love, give love.  If you want good friends, be a good friend.  If you want money, provide value.  It works.  It really is this simple.

Keep your promises and tell the truth. If you say you’re going to do something, DO IT!  If you say you’re going to be somewhere, BE THERE!  If you say you feel something, MEAN IT!  If you can’t, won’t, and don’t, then DON’T LIE.  It’s always better to tell people the truth up front. Dont play games with people’s heads and hearts.   Remember, love and friendship don’t hurt.  Lying, cheating and screwing with people’s feelings and emotions hurts.  Never mess with someone’s feelings just because you’re unsure of yours.  Always be open and honest.

be the type of person you want to meet

Talk a little less, listen more, and pay attention to others. Most of the time people don’t need lots of advice, they need a listening ear and positive reinforcement.  What they want to know is often already somewhere inside of them.  They just need time to think, be and breathe, and continue to explore the undirected journeys that will eventually help them find their direction.

Be your imperfectly perfect self. In this crazy world that’s trying to make you like everyone else, find the courage to keep being your awesome self.  People enjoy spending time with others who are happy, content, and confident. Be who you are and OWN IT. You’ll empower others to do the same.

Work on being the type of person you want to be around.
You must focus energy inward first.  Before befriending others, you have to be your own friend.  Before making others happy, you have to make yourself happy.  It’s not called selfishness; it’s called personal development.

Even when you’re with others, you’re still with yourself.  When you wake up in the morning, you’re with yourself.  Laying in bed at night you’re with yourself.  Walking down the street at noon you’re with yourself.  What kind of person do you want to walk down the street with?  What kind of person do you want to wake up in the morning with?  What kind of person do you want to see at the end of the day before you fall asleep?  It’s your responsibility to be the person you want to be with.

It’s important to surround yourself with relationships that lift you up, but first it’s important to start with yourself. Whats one way you can work on being the type of person you want to meet starting today?

Surround yourself with positive people by joining me in the facebook community. Looking forward to connecting with you online and continuing to watch you shine. YOU are the type of person I want to meet!!
