Here’s my #1 Secret to Stay Fit for life and how to embrace active living with a positive relationship to exercise.

Ever wonder how some people are always motivated to exercise? They never seem to struggle with consistency and have energy for days. Its like they stay in shape without even trying. You, on the other hand are exhausted by the thought of it. Staying in shape takes SO much effort. Exercise is a constant source of frustration and stress. You feel like you’ll never be one of those motivated fit folks. Whats their secret??

I was raised in a family where exercise was a positive. It wasn’t something you did to “get six pack abs” or to win a race. It was something that was a natural and enjoyable part of life. I was taught that my body was a gift and to be grateful for my health. This allowed me to grow up loving workouts. Exercise wasnt something you “had to” do, it was something you “chose to do”. Workouts made me feel good and I liked to feel good, so it became an inherent habit in my lifestyle . I’m really grateful to my parents for this perspective on movement. I believe it is because of this mindset that I’ve been able to enjoy an active, healthy, and happy life.

People often ask me what I’m “training” for or what my “secret” is. I tell them it’s my relationship to exercise. I’m am consistent and motivated because I workout to FEEL good. It’s through this positive relationship to exercise and perception of how it influences a more powerful life that enables me to live fit, be consistent, and be happy within myself.

I see so many people struggle with a negative relationship to exercise. They feel good when they do it, guilty when they don’t. They yo-yo with workouts or feel lost without an event to train for. They beat themselves up or go to extremes only to end up burnout, injured, or more unfulfilled. They are always looking for the next thing thats going to “kick their butt into shape” or fix all of their weight struggles once and for all.  Focusing only on the external or looking to workouts to “fix you” is setting you up for unrealistic expectations, disappointment, and a lifetime of fighting with exercise and with yourself.

It doesn’t need to be this way.  I feel passionately that everyone deserves to have a positive relationship to exercise, one that fuels them with energy, health, and enthusiasm. It shouldn’t have to be all or nothing. You don’t need to fight with exercise or struggle with yourself. Stop doing it to “look good” or to win something. Start doing it to FEEL good and to enjoy your beautiful, healthy body. Do it to ease stress, to challenge yourself, to build confidence and strength. I believe shifting your mindset will help you develop a relationship to exercise that enables you to live a long life fueled with health.

Here are some great health benefits of exercise to focus on:

  • Thinking clearly
  • Sleeping better
  • Feeling stronger to tackle other lifestyle changes
  • More get-up-and-go!
  • Increased enthusiasm
  • A sense of achievement
  • Feeling in control
  • Increased strength to cope with life’s pressures
  • More alert / improved concentration
  • Able to relax
  • Enjoying ‘me time’
  • more energy
  • better health
  • improved focus
  • stress relief
  • confidence
  • self-esteem
  • improved performance (in EVERYTHING!)
  • time for yourself / self-care

Additionally, you and I can enjoy the satisfaction that through exercise you’re also reducing the risk of many health conditions like:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Osteoporosis
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Joint and back problem
  • Dementia in later life

I want to invite you to stop looking at fitness as something you feel you “should do” to look healthy and instead look at fitness as something you want to do to feel healthy. I want to help you develop a positive relationship to exercise and make it an uplifting and rewarding part of your lifestyle. With the right information, support, and mindset you CAN incorporate movement into your life as a regular habit. Fitness is not a destination, it is a way of living. I want to invite you to shift your focus away from external goals to internal rewards. Do this and I can guarantee you that you’ll have a positive relationship to exercise that will be with you for life. Thats my #1 secret to staying fit and LOVING it! What will be motivating YOU to move this week?

Here’s to you feeling your best inside and out,

The other day my friend called complaining about nagging ankle pain. “It hurts when I run, jump, and take group fitness class. I’ve tried everything and I cant seem to get rid of it!” . “How tight are your calves?” I asked him. “Thats a good question…. probably pretty tight!”. I advised him to stretch and roll his calves and feet, then report back with an update. Within a few days he got back to me, “Man that calf rolling really made a difference! The ankle pain is almost completely gone. Im going to keep up with the rolling until Im pain free. Great advice!”

Im not saying that rolling out your Tight Calves will solve all of your problems…. but it will probably help!

Tight Calves muscles cause poor movement patterns and are bad news for any type of exercise or fitness routine. But you can prevent pain, improve performance, and help your calf muscles function at their best with regular self massage. Be preventative! Take time to release tight, sore, tense calves so that you can run, cycle, jump, and enjoy the activities you love PAIN FREE. I filmed this 12 minute massage video so that you can take care of your calves before they cause you problems. These exercises are designed as physical therapy to help you massage and stretch your calf muscles for healthy calves, feet, toes, ankles, and shins. In this free massage routine you’ll learn exercises you can do before and after exercise to prevent injury and improve performance. This video uses a yoga tune up ball (or tennis ball, lacrosse ball, soft ball, ANY ball) and a yoga block to perform self massage techniques. If you don’t own yoga tune up therapy balls, its really easy to purchase them online here: Yoga Tune Up Jill Miller’s Therapy Balls. They are worth EVERY penny! You will use them and feel amazing 🙂

Help for Tight Calves. 12 minute stretching and foam rolling video

*** Disclaimer: Know that foam rolling a tight muscle may cause discomfort. This usually means the area NEEDS attention. Work at it slowly. Roll back and forth in small movements or simply apply pressure to create a release. Each time you use your foam roller makes the next time a little bit easier. Just don’t forget to BREATHE! This video is not meant to diagnose or treat injury or illness. As always: Check with your doctor before starting this or any exercise routine. Honor and listen to your body ALWAYS! ***

One way to keep your body strong, flexible, and pain free is to perform self massage, mobilization, and physical therapy techniques regularly. Leave me a comment below if you try this Tight Calves video and let me know how you feel! I hope these massage and physical therapy moves keep your calves healthy and  body feeling good.

Make a Totally Awesome Difference: Help me Fundraise and be Crowned 80’s Prom Queen!

2013, the “Year of Yes”, was when I really started getting involved fundraising for charity.

Raise awareness of a worthy cause? YES.
Join like minded people in supporting a worthy cause? YES
Host fun social events that benefit a worthy cause? YES.
Take your free time and make a difference? YES.

It was a year that allowed me not only to give back, but also allowed me to build meaningful memories and friendships. Since 2013, I’ve been actively involved in several fundraisers. Ive led riders in Cycle For Survival, coached super tan Bay babes in Mr. Marina, taught bootcamps for leukemia and Lymphoma, and even hosted a few birthday parties for local SF causes like Family House. And now that I’ve seen the positive impact and ripple effect, I don’t plan on stopping this work that gives back.

Thats why when I got a phone call to be nominated for 80’s Prom Queen I said “yes”. My Prom Party coach, Billy Davis, was the one that politely asked, “will you accept our nomination for 80’s Prom Queen and help us give back?” There was a moment I second guessed myself, not sure if I wanted to put myself up on stage in shoulder pads and neon. But then I realized that it was so much more than that, and that I could actually help raise awareness of a good cause and give back.

The Guardsmen is a group of Bay Area men mobilizing their significant talents and resources to enhance and improve the lives of at-risk youth. This all-volunteer organization, founded in 1947, provides access to high-quality educational and outdoor activities for inner-city youth.  The opportunities created through The Guardsmen’s scholarship and campership programs mean that every year kids who otherwise would not have a chance at success are given the opportunity to excel as productive members of society.  Each year The Guardsmen sends 2,500 youth to outdoor education programs and provides scholarship support to more than 250 students at Bay Area private schools.

As a teacher and coach, I know how life changing it is to have the right support. Can you imagine how hard it is to be a city kid and not have the resources or encouragement to succeed? It makes me realize how incredibly fortunate I was growing up. I had access to programs and mentors that believed in me and gave me experiences that shaped me into the woman I am today. I believe everyone deserves that. And I want my work in this world to enable others to fulfil their greatest potential.

So now that I’ve said YES I need your support. On Saturday July 25 support the Gaurdsmen will be hosting the 80’s Prom party at the Julia Morgan Ballroom. Just like prom in High School, the Gaurdsmen will crown a prom king and a prom queen at the party. YOU CAN HELP Help “Vote” for me as Prom Queen and raise funds for a positive cause by donating to my page here. The 80’s Prom King and Queen will be selected by their fundraising efforts and totally awesomeness. All proceeds go to Guardsmen programs supporting at-risk Bay Area youth. And if you’d like to join us for a totally rad 80’s party, tickets can be purchased through this link:

My personal heroes are everyday visionaries and dreamers, those beautiful people among us who try to make the world a better place than when they found it, whether in tiny ways or enormous ones.  Some succeed, some fail, most have mixed results… but it’s the effort itself that’s heroic, as I see it.  Win or lose, I admire those who fight the good fight. No matter who wins the 80’s Prom Queen crown, I am thankful for the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for a cause I believe in.

Because, win or lose, it’s this act of fighting for something greater than yourself that makes your story an inspiring one in the long run.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The purpose of life is not to simply be happy.  It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

Thank you for your consideration in making a donation. I hope to share a dance with you at 80’s Prom!

In gratitude,

Pride Party Workout Playlist

On June 27th and 28th 2015, San Francisco celebrated the 45th anniversary of San Francisco Pride. The theme was “Equality Without Exception” and the event hosted over 200 parade contingents, 300 exhibitors, and more than twenty community-run stages and venues. The San Francisco Pride Celebration is one of the largest Pride events in the world and is dedicated to education, to the commemoration of LGBT heritage, and to the celebration of LGBT culture and liberation.

A world leader in the Pride movement, SF Pride is also a grant-giving organization through their Community Partners Program. Since 1997, SF Pride has granted over $2.4 million dollars from proceeds of the Pride Celebration and Parade to local non-profit LGBT organizations and those organizations working on issues related to HIV/AIDS, cancer, homelessness, and animal welfare.

This year was an extra special celebration because of the U.S. Supreme Court decision Friday June 26th that legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states. Basically, this means that there is no longer any such thing as gay marriage: It’s simply a union between two people who love each other. And that my friends is simply AWESOME.

“Pride has come to symbolize several things: the long history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer dignity, the freedom of all people to meaningfully and proudly express their sexual and gender identities, and the commitment of LGBT people to combating oppression.” says SF Pride “From this history of rebellion grew the mission of San Francisco LGBT Pride: to educate the world, celebrate our culture, commemorate our heritage and liberate our people.”

I feel proud to live in a city that honors and recognizes such a beautiful cause. We celebrated all weekend in my group fitness classes at EQUINOX with positive energy, enthusiasm, workouts, and uplifting music. My favorite gym even got all dressed up for the occasion with an amazing Pride display on it’s tall beautiful pillars (photo above – what a rainbow! EQUINOX Pine Street is always lookin good ). I wanted to share one of my Pride playlists with you, so you could enjoy a part of our celebration too. Its a great mix to empower your next workout or simply to make you smile and remember that LOVE ALWAYS WINS.

Leave me a comment and let me know if you play this mix and like it!

And as always, if you enjoyed this post SHARE it with your friends on Facebooktwitter, or email. More great content is headed your way every week to help you live a happy, healthy life!

Next years SF Pride celebration is set to take place on June 25 and 26, 2016. Save the date and I’ll see you to celebrate 🙂

Sending love to you,
