Yoga Tune Up Therapy Balls

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know how obsessed I am with my balls 😉 Created by Jill Miller the Yoga Tune Up Therapy Balls measure at about 2 1/2″ in diameter each and are made of a special rubber that grips at your skin, grabs at multiple layers of muscles, and rubs out adhesions and tension, providing a deep tissue massage. Jill created Yoga Tune Up® as a simple way to restore her body and mind to keep balanced and free of pain. And its TRUE: through regular self massage you too can LIVE BETTER IN YOUR BODY. If you havent experienced the yoga tune up balls you are doing your body a disservice. I travel with them everywhere and pull them out whenever I feel a muscle get cranky. Want to get rid of pain but dont know where to start? Ive created a whole YouTube video playlist to help you learn how to recover, restore, and renew your body with strategic self massage.

Vega Protein

Everyone loves to fuel right, they just dont always love paying the price. However the question shouldnt be why is healthy food so expensive, it should be why is unhealthy food is so cheap. When you choose to invest in the best, you reap the benefits. I’ve been a Vega product user for years and truly believe in the products and the quality of health they supply. I’ve learned how to fuel BETTER through experimenting with the Vega line in my healthy lifestyle. From Vega One All in One Nutritional Shake to Vega Protein & Greens there is a perfect product for every lifestyle and diet. For your athletic friends, the company just upgraded their Vega Sport Performance Protein line which now has:

  • Added Performance Ingredients: turmeric, tart cherry, black pepper, probiotics (1 billion CFUs), and bromelain
  • New Non-GMO Project certified Protein Blend: from pea, pumpkin seed, organic sunflower seed and alfalfa protein

Just like always, Vega products are made without dairy, soy, artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners. Its my go-to choice for fueling right. You can check out my simple protein smoothie and pumpkin spice smoothie for simple ideas on how to fuel better with Vega.

Positively Inspiring Workout Tanks

I teamed up with local designers Manifesto Print Co to create tee-shirts with positive messages. I believe these tanks can serve as a reminder to train positive and live in gratitude. Even something as simple as a screen print tee can actually signal the mind to move into a more powerful place. Below are two “Caroline Jordan Fitness” positive thought workout tops to help you train positive. You can order directly from the links below the photos, they ship nationwide.

I believe positive thoughts equal positive results and that when your mind is in a good place your life will follow suit. Would you smile if you saw one of these tees in the gym? Yea I thought so…. I would too 🙂

Fabiola Molina Athletic Swimwear

Do you have goals to learn how to swim in the New Year or a friend who’s a fiend in the pool? Ive been a swimmer since 2004 and it is one of my favorite ways to stay fit and well. But as you know, sports swim suits arent always cute. Thats why when I met the Fabiola Molina line of swim wear I fell in love. Made by Brazilian olympic swimmer, Fabiola Molina, her colorful collection of sports swimsuits are designed to look cute while you train your butt off. I’ve tested out her two piece sunkini in the pool, ocean, and even diving off a 50 foot cliff jump in Hawaii and can tell you – these suits are designed to stay put and get compliments. The best part is the affordable price – one two piece costs less than 1/2 of a American suit….. for quality that lasts longer and looks better, Fabiola Molina is where its at. Designs for both men & women, check out their international store online at:

Anything Lululemon.

You really cant go wrong with anything lululemon as a gift. Its simply the BEST. On a tight budget? How about some socks? For $14 bucks, they make the perfect stocking stuffer and I can guarantee you anytime the recipient puts them on their feet they will smile.

Join Me For Healthy Hour Oct 22nd 6:30-8:30pm Studiomix San Francisco

It often feels like your social and fitness goals are a conflict of interest with each other. You want to spend time with your friends, but usually it is at the expense of your workouts, diet, or sleep. Does it always have to be a struggle between friends vs. health? Is there a way for both priorities to take equal place in your life?
Yes. Create the space to enjoy your health goals WITH your social life. Cook healthy meals, go on fitness workout adventures, savor down time that supports both your friendship bond AND enables you to be heathy. Its all about how you choose to spend time with your friends. Combining the social and fitness areas of your life may unlock stronger relationships and a stronger body along with it.
Thats why I wanted to host  “Healthy Hour”, an event that creates social fitness as a way to enhance both health and happiness. Many of my closest friendships have come from movement. I have a strong bond with my running buddy, dance friends, and fitness industry colleagues. I believe this is thanks to our time spent enjoying physical workouts and bonding over the effort, endorphins, and sense of accomplishment. Then vs. Now. Reflections on my life in COLOR.

Lululemon Athletica is much more than just high quality spandex. Its a company that creates the components for people to live longer, healthier, more fulfilling lives. It is a company that is COMMITTED to living by it’s  manifesto. Want to be inspired? Read it below:

the lululemon manifesto

  • Drink FRESH water and as much water as you can. Water flushes unwanted toxins from your body and keeps your brain sharp.
  • A daily hit of athletic-induced endorphins gives you the power to make better decisions, helps you be at peace with yourself, and offsets stress.
  • Do one thing a day that scares you.
  • Listen, listen, listen, and then ask strategic questions.
  • Write down your short and long-term GOALS four times a year. Two personal, two business and two health goals for the next 1, 5 and 10 years. Goal setting triggers your subconscious computer.
  • Life is full of setbacks. Success is determined by how you handle setbacks.
  • Your outlook on life is a direct reflection of how much you like yourself.
  • That which matters the most should never give way to that which matters the least.
  • Stress is related to 99% of all illness.
  • Jealousy works the opposite way you want it to.
  • The world is changing at such a rapid rate that waiting to implement changes will leave you 2 steps behind. DO IT NOW, DO IT NOW, DO IT NOW!
  • Friends are more important than money.
  • Breathe deeply and appreciate the moment. Living in the moment could be the meaning of life.
  • Take various vitamins. You never know what small mineral can eliminate the bottleneck to everlasting health.
  • Don’t trust that an old age pension will be sufficient.
  • Visualize your eventual demise. It can have an amazing effect on how you live for the moment.
  • The conscious brain can only hold one thought at a time. Choose a positive thought.
  • Live near the ocean and inhale the pure salt air that flows over the water, Vancouver will do nicely.
  • Observe a plant before and after watering and relate these benefits to your body and brain.
  • Practice yoga so you can remain active in physical sports as you age.
  • Dance, sing, floss and travel.
  • Children are the orgasm of life. Just like you did not know what an orgasm was before you had one, nature does not let you know how great children are until you have them.
  • Successful people replace the words “wish”, “should” and “try” with “I will”.
  • Creativity is maximized when you’re living in the moment.
  • Nature wants us to be mediocre because we have a greater chance to survive and reproduce. Mediocre is as close to the bottom as it is to the top, and will give you a lousy life.
  • lululemon athletica creates components for people to live longer, healthier and more fun lives. If we can produce products to keep people active and stress-free, we believe the world will become a much better place.
  • Do not use cleaning chemicals on your kitchen counters. Someone will inevitably make a sandwich on your counter.
  • SWEAT once a day to regenerate your skin.
  • Communication is COMPLICATED. We are all raised in a different family with slightly different definitions of every word. An agreement is an agreement only if each party knows the conditions for satisfaction and a time is set for satisfaction to occur.
  • What we do to the earth we do to ourselves.
  • The pursuit of happiness is the source of all unhappiness.

This past week, a seemingly innocent afternoon invite to visit turned into a celebratory ambush complete with confetti, red pants, and french macarons. On Monday December 3 2012, lululemon athletica Grant Avenue PROPOSED and asked me to be a lululemon Ambassador for the 2013 year.

What is a lululemon Ambassador, you ask?
“Ambassadors are outstanding yogis, athletes, and fitness leaders within our communities who embody the lululemon lifestyle and live the our culture. These individuals personally contribute to our vision of elevating the world from mediocrity to greatness.” (

When the Ambassador program first began, it was purely a product feedback relationship, and has since turned into a lot more.  Now it’s a relationship between the Ambassador, the store and the community. Lululemon doesn’t “sponsor” athletes, so this is their way of getting to promote and connect with local instructors, athletes, and wellness professionals. They pick people active in the community who are passionate about their career and who’s work reflects the lululemon product, culture, and manifesto. I had the opportunity to represent Grant Avenue as an ambassador in 2009 and I am honored to have the chance to do it again in 2013.

My experience with lululemon has been more positive, powerful, and fulfilling than I ever could have imagined.  They sent me on an unforgettable trip to CANADA, filled my San Francisco years with memorable events, and have created a community that feels like family. I am so grateful to have this unique opportunity to represent the store and be an ambassador once more. I can’t stop smiling and I am looking forward to a year full of making memories with powerful people.

Looking back, I am a much different person now than when I first was an ambassador in 2009. The successes, failures, and learning lessons of the past  few years have allowed me to grow and slowly come into my own. It feels like I am an Ambassador for the first time all over again, as an upgraded version of Caroline, a stronger one. The line from the manifesto that relates most to me right now is “DO one thing a day that scares you”. This past year I have been earnestly challenging myself to leave the comfort zone and my life has blossomed as a result.  It’s astonishing how when you put your needs first, the rest of your life starts falling into place. This revolutionary concept serves as my motivation to keep moving forward, even when the path gets scary.

I’m proud of myself for overcoming fears, trusting my gut, and working hard towards living a life that feels right in my heart. I’ve learned to trust the process and be patient. It doesn’t happen all at once. You become and it takes a long time. I may not be there yet, but I am closer today than I was in 2009 and I owe part of my progress to lululemon. Their belief in me and loving support has often been the extra ammunition needed to keep me moving forward towards my goals. No person is an island and it’s helpful to have a team cheering me on in lululemon.

My biggest learning lesson from this past year is this: Doing one thing a day that SCARES you gives you freedom. It’s not easy. But if you can break down the walls and leave the cage of your fears: you will FLY, you will SOAR, you will be UNSTOPPABLE.

Thank you lululemon Grant Avenue for believing in me and helping me fly free. This will be my best year yet. Heres to a year  full of flying high, flying far, and doing one thing every day that scares you.

With love and gratitude,

Your SUPER EXCITED Ambassador for 2013,

The “Dog Days Of August” Adventure Checklist

The “Dog Days of August” Adventure Checklist.

Why hello there August! Commonly referred to as “The Dog Days of Summer”, the month is known for being the last chance to soak up sun before the fall season begins. It is also home to some incredibly random holidays like National Mustard Day, National Romance Awareness month,  National Creamsicle Day, and the National Polka Festival. Who knew August could be so incredible? If you’re not ready to do the Polka just yet, I thought I’d share a few other ideas that might inspire a summer adventure or two for you. Live it up and enjoy the “Dog Days of summer” before they are over!

1. Have a Fitness Adventure. Staying in shape during summer doesn’t mean choosing between having fun and staying fit. You can get your motivation revved up just by mixing it up a bit!  And thats exactly what you should do when your fitness motivation starts to dwindle. It’s extremely beneficial to branch away from a fitness routine and find other ways to make your workouts fun. Here are a few fitness adventure ideas for you. Surprise yourself and do something new!

2. Inspire an active work culture.  There are many ways to incorporate more movement into your working days without looking awkward or ticking off your boss. With the knowledge, preparation, and planning you CAN be more active in the office. Here are my TOP tips to fit more fitness into your 9-5. Trust me, every little bit counts and adding extra spurts of activity into your working days adds up! And who knows, showing your commitment to a “feel good” lifestyle might influence others to be active and inspire a healthier work culture. BE the change and make fitness part of your working world routine  🙂

3. Get Your Neon ON. I am a firm believer that life is better IN COLOR. Wearing bright clothing can raise your energy levels, make you smile, and give your workout the boost needed to go the extra mile. Invest in a bit of bright workout gear and bring your wardrobe some cheer. Try  Nike Frees or a hot lululemon athletica racerback to spice up your summer fitness attire. Guarantee all that color will make you smile.

4. Savor Seasonal Produce. Local seasonal foods are tastier, fresher and more nutritious. Why? It’s because the produce has been harvested in the last fews days and has only travelled a short distance to market. This means less packaging, processing and refrigeration. All good for the environment (no flying in food from all corners of the planet)and your health. Here is a list of fruits and veggies that are in season for August:

    • Apples
    • Apricots
    • Arugula
    • Basil
    • Beans
    • Beets
    • Blueberries
    • Corn
    • Cucumbers
    • Dates
    • Eggplant
    • Fennel
    • Figs
    • Grapes
    • Mangoes
    • Melons
    • Nectarines
    • Okra
    • Peaches
    • Peppers
    • Plums
    • Raspberries
    • Sorrel
    • Summer squash
    • Tomatoes
    • Watermelon

And great all year:

    • Avocados
    • Bananas
    • Broccoli
    • Cabbage
    • Carrots
    • Cauliflower
    • Celery
    • Garlic
    • Ginger
    • Kiwifruit
    • Lemons
    • Limes
    • Mushrooms
    • Onions
    • Pineapple
    • Potatoes
    • Radishes
    • Scallions
    • Snow Peas
    • Spinach
    • Sprouts

Add any of the above to your shopping cart and savor a fresh colorful summer meal with those you love. Try out a few of my favorite ways to add fruits and veggies into daily meals.

5. Get Inspired by the Summer Olympics 2012. Tune in and watch top athletes compete and celebrate the beauty and art of sport. Better yet, invite friends over for a little Olympic get together. Prepare a few healthy snacks and treat yourself to an evening of quality friendships and inspirational athletic events.

6. Commit to consistent strength training. Im a huge advocate of regular strength training. Not only does it provide amazing physical results (sorry cardio queens, you’ll never get the lean muscle mass you want without strength training) it gives you long lasting health benefits. Never strength trained before? Don’t be scared! The American Council on Exercise has an extensive library of weight training moves to guide you. And you can also check out some of these informative posts:

There are lots of good tips and workout ideas in the above articles. I’d also recommend checking out an intro session with a personal trainer or asking if your gym has a free strength training equipment orientation.

7. Take A Hike. An active outdoor lifestyle is a great way to stay fit, and hiking is an ideal way to get and stay in shape. Hiking helps to condition your major muscle groups and cardiovascular system. Read my tips on hiking fitness and get a few excellent resources to help you find the right hiking trails for YOU.

8. Pack A Healthy Snack. Science says snacking is good for you. The 5,000-subject-strong National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that people who ate snacks in addition to three meals a day had higher levels of nutrients in their diets. Healthy snacks are an important part of a balanced diet and can produce ultimate performance. Eating snacks through out the day can keep your energy high and your  blood sugar level from dipping. Planned snacking reduces the likelihood of choosing unhealthy foods, over-eating at meal time, or the experiencing energy “crash and burn”. Not only that, but a smart snack can POWER up your workouts and help you  achieve all your fitness goals and dreams. Here is my list of premium training snacks. Some of them are my favorites… others are client’s top picks. All of these are great to add to your August eats…. did someone say coconut? 😉

9. Get With the Group.  Break out of your workout comfort zone and make new fitness friends with a community workout event. Go to your local sports store or lululemon athletica  and inquire about different events and fitness clubs in your area. There are lots of local run clubs, bootcamps, or fitness classes that would love to have you participate.  I had a BLAST running with lululemon athletica and the SF marathon team’s run club last weekend. Check out all the friendly faces that came to our Shake Out Run in the photos from last weekend. I love making new fitness friends and cant WAIT to do it again 🙂

10. Give Thanks. Practicing gratitude can center you, help you live in the moment, enhance your relationships, help you overcome hurdles, improve your health, and motivate you to reach your goals. Showing gratitude is a great way to spread positive feelings in the world around you. When you think about it, reaching your goals starts with a single positive thought. Feeling grateful for what you have can produce the good feelings that keep you moving towards the happy life you want. A journal is one of the best ways to benefit from the the power of gratitude. Here are my 5 steps towards starting a gratitude journal practice and cultivating more positive into your life. I am a firm believer that regularly practicing gratitude has the power to change your life in ways you never dreamed possible. Challenge yourself to keep a journal for August and fill the month happiness simply by giving thanks.

Looking forward to an amazing month filled with adventure and health! Hope to see YOU soon for an August workout!

With Gratitude,

Running Celebration Issue!

Running makes me feel like an athlete. It makes me appreciate different aspects of different seasons and the beauty of the world we live in. It makes me aware of things I never was aware of before. It has taught me more about myself then I ever thought “exercise” would. I have pushed my limits. I have found some limits. I have learned I am not a quitter and that I can do anything I put my mind to. It gives me structure and helps relieve stress, but mostly it just makes me happy.

In the spirit of running and this weekends’ San Francisco marathon,  I thought it would be fun to do a post ALL about the sport. Included below are workouts, playlists, and upcoming SPECIAL EVENTS to celebrate running health and happiness. Even if you’re NOT running in a marathon (or ever plan to!), I hope these links entice you to make running/walking a part of  your fitness regimen.

Make a DIFFERENCE. Cycle for Survival 2012

To My Fearless Fitness Family,

On February 4th, I’m TEACHING and riding at Cycle for Survival at EQUINOX San Francisco. This national, indoor relay-style team cycling event that has raised more than $9 million in support of life-changing research on rare cancers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, one of the world’s premiere cancer research institutions.

I will be riding with over 10,000 other cyclers from across the country and around the world to make a difference in the lives of millions of people affected by rare cancers. Rare cancers include cancers of the brain, ovarian, pancreatic, leukemia, lymphoma, sarcoma, all pediatric cancers, and countless others that all desperately need our attention and help.

Every dollar I raise goes directly to MSKCC to fund research on rare cancers. In just the past five years, Cycle has funded a total of twenty-five new clinical trials and research studies with the promise of so many from the success of Cycle 2012.

Watch this VIDEO to see just how powerful  Cycle For Survival Events have been in the past.  This progress — and the hope it brings to patients and their families — is only possible because of thoughtful contributions from people like you! I hope you’ll make a gift to support my ride against cancer. The link below will bring you to my fundraising page, where you can make a tax-deductible online donation.

I thought I’d post some strategies and tips to help you boost your positive self-talk and silence your inner critic. This is the first of three strategies to help you… check back into the blog later this week for the other two!  Hope these help you feel good INSIDE and out – enjoy!

Strategy #1: Channel your Emotions

How you feel about your body impacts your goals, according to a new study from McGill University. Researchers asked subjects to measure emotions like pride, shame, and guilt as they relate to body image. They found those with higher levels of pride in a strong, fit, body had more motivation and were more likely to workout. Bottom line? The prouder you are of your FIT body, the more active you’ll be. Your emotions are linked to your motivation and your motivation is linked to behavior. It’s a cyclical relationship. You can use your emotions to fuel your fitness with these simple techniques:

AFFIRM your pride.

Work to get in control of the emotions around your body – how you think about your body and talk to yourself about it. It may sound a little bit silly, but simply saying “Im proud of myself” on REPEAT goes a LONG way towards helping you see yourself in a more positive light and stops trash talk before it can start.

Focus on each achievement and what you ARE doing, rather than what you’re not doing. Instead, of focusing day-to-day on the final outcome you want (rock hard abs, weight loss, etc) focus on the STEPS you are taking to reach the outcome. You’re less likely to feel ashamed of your shortcomings if you keep plotting yourself on the path toward a goal. Here’s a good example: “Last month I could only hold a plank for 30 seconds…. now I can hold it for a full minute!”

CHANGE the way you TALK to yourself

When you start to have negative talk or TRASH talk (“I hate my “muffin top”‘ or “I cant do these crunches”), have a prompt that reminds you that you are thinking negatively, so that you can STOP it before it effects your workout and your health. Write something on your hand, as simple as “I CAN do this” or “I feel great” or have a sticker or something visual to remind you to get OUT of negative self talk and switch to choosing a POSITIVE thought.

It also helps to go to a group fitness class and find others that support your health goals and celebrate your accomplishments. Come to a class this week…. Ill help you focus on all the POSITIVES of the exercise experience. My goal is to support YOU in ENJOYING the amazing body you have through movement 🙂

Check back in later this week for MORE tips and techniques to help you TAKE OUT THE TRASH. Till then…. Keep up the positive thoughts!

Fearless Fitness TIP of the Week: Train to ATTACK Limiting Beliefs!

The following includes some excerpts from Todd Durkin’s book, “The IMPACT Body Plan”. I HIGHLY recommend this book – it will change the way you  live and train 🙂

You’ve written your DECREE and made your GOALS a reality…. Now how do you begin making the CHANGES you want to see?

First UNDERSTAND yourself. One of the biggest mental hurdles holding people back from real success is a LIMITING BELIEF system. Maybe it was the way you were raised, or the people surrounding you, or a lack of self-confidence, or even fear – there are many causes. If you NURTURE limiting beliefs, they’ll rule your behavior ALL your life. I’ve heard it all:

“I’m not athletic enough to have a regular workout program” (so I dont have to)

“I’ve never been able to loose the fat in my thighs or belly.” (So I wont try)

“Women shouldn’t workout with weights” (So I’ll stick to the treadmill).

“I have a bad back” (So I’ll remain sedentary)

“I’m afraid to change because…..” (NOTHING changes!)

These examples illustrate how people allow self-defeating thoughts to rule their activity and in turn, their fitness, their well-being, their ultimate ability to succeed. Limiting belief systems are LEARNED behaviors. But if you can learn it, you can also UN-learn it. Lets SMASH though all those obstacles this year and make your goals REAL.

To attack your limiting belief systems, realize you must work on strengthening your mindset first. If your mental, emotional, and spiritual side – your inner self – is out of shape, you’ll never find the kind of success in life you hope to find – no matter how hard you work your body. This means you have to condition your inner self the same way you condition your outer self – with specific exercises designed to help you.

Fitness isn’t just about how you look. Its about how you FEEL, perform, and what you can achieve. We’re emotional and spiritual beings. How you look is a side effect of how a regular workout program affects your physical capabilities, your mental toughness, your ability to achieve. And whats one of the biggest programs we all face? We are emotionally overstressed and physically understressed. We live sedentary lives while never dragging our emotional garbage out on to the curb – anxiety, disappointment, fear, frustration, anger – you name it. We steep in our own stress hormones, doing nothing to release the pain. So you have to train INWARDLY just as aggressively as you train outwardly.

So yes, I have been ON YOU in class about writing your goals and spending time looking inward. But I believe that the mental strength you build will help you reach your goals and so much more this year. Last week you wrote your DECREE. Thats the first step in identifying and actualizing your goals. Now what do you need to REALLY start making changes?

If you want to be the best you must maintain a positive mental attitude at all times. And thats NOT easy to do. So this year, I challenge you to train your brain to attack limiting beliefs and negative thoughts. It’s so easy to slip into a negative mindset, especially if it has been that way for years. But if you COMMIT to eliminate those tendencies in yourself, you will see your thoughts gradually change from negative to positive. Below are a few exercises that will help you develop your POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE!

Fearless Fitness Challenge of the Week: STRENGTHEN your Positive Mental Attitude

Do all of these exercises during the day and you’ll see incredible positive attitude results!

  • Seek out positive people. What if your best friend is the most negative person in the world? Make an effort to meet and engage with positive-minded, high-performing people. They lift you up and show you the way everytime.
  • Find your trigger. Whenever you think of act negatively, give yourself a signal – snap a rubber band around your wrist, put a quarter in a jar, something relevant to you alone that reminds you of what you are trying to accomplish. As these moments occur, try to discover your personal negativity triggers – a certain person, world news, politics, whatever sets you off. Once you discover them, you can better handle them.
  • Have an ATTITUDE of gratitude. This one always really helps me. Anytime Im tempted to think negatively, I choose one thing that I am grateful for at that moment. Somehow once I find one, another follows, and then more pop up…. until I’ve got a handful of positive thoughts.
  • Post inspiring quotes. You probably saw this one coming… Im so full of quotes during class you might already have a few favorites (or think Im silly because of it 🙂 But I believe in the power of positive words. Motivation comes from motivators. Put inspiring quotes  everywhere (desk, computer, fridge, above your bed). Let them engage you and elevate your thinking.

If you have yet to write your DECREE – get ON it. That combined with developing your positive attitude will help you get connected to your emotional and spiritual self – your INNER STRENGTH. It’s all about the stuff you’ve got buried inside that maybe you dont understand right now. These exercises will help you!

Do the work. Get your mind right and UP your positive mental strength. 2011 is YOUR year to DOMINATE!

Make your New Years Workout goal LAST past January…. READ THIS POST!

January in the gym is like the mall before Christmas. MADNESS. After months of holiday celebrations and overindulgence, January becomes a time  to get the REAR back in gear. Whether you have a new years health resolution or are just eager to get back into your fitness routine, be careful not to believe the following…..

FITNESS MYTH: “If I’m Not Sore or In Pain, I’m not working out hard enough”.

The most common mistake in January? Going TOO hard TOO fast TOO soon. I call it the “terrible TOO’s” – and it leads to injuries, burnout, and a negative training mindset. It’s also the reason the gym is empty come February. It’s time to change that. This year, I want to encourage you to EASE back into it. Take the time to develop a well-rounded, balanced workout program that gradually builds your strength, cardio, and flexibility. DON’T seek soreness. Soreness can come from different factors that have nothing to do with the quality of your workout, like how many reps you perform or what you eat before and or after your workouts. You can judge the quality of your workout by wearing a heart rate monitor and working at least 60 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate. Push yourself with that type of intensity and I can gaurentee you’ll be getting a terrific workout whether you’re sore or not.

Judging your workout with a heart rate monitor is only one purely physiological measure. Try a psychological measure instead: Disengage from the physical part of the workout for a moment and picture yourself just finishing your workout. How do you FEEL? Are you smiling? Relaxed? Less Stressed? How’s your energy level? Break away from the negative and painful focus on SORENESS. I challenge you to judge the quality of your workouts by more than just the soreness factor. This year, don’t let the “terrible TOOs” keep you from reaching your yearly fitness goals!

Random story on soreness that makes me smile….

I had the opportunity to take a yoga class from fellow lululemon ambassador, world-wide yoga guru, and blissologist Eoin Finn. After the class a student complained that the yoga workout just didn’t make him sore enough. To that, Eoin replied:

“So is that why we have sex, to be sore after?”

Funny, and yet so true. Exercise isn’t meant to HURT you. It’s there to make you feel better. Get rid of the negative soreness mindset and allow 2011 to be the year you ENJOY movement!
